GTA VI’s Project Americas Rumor: Why the Old Multi-City Claim Still Isn’t Reliable

An old GTA VI claim known as the “Project Americas” rumor continues to resurface whenever players compare maps, trailers, and alleged feature lists. The original post appeared on Reddit in 2019 from an anonymous account, u/JackOLantern1982, and claimed Rockstar was developing a GTA game with a Vice City setting, a wider Americas-themed scope, and a story set across earlier decades.

It remains unconfirmed. More importantly, several of the rumor’s biggest details do not match what Rockstar has officially shown since then. That makes this a useful reminder for GTA VI players, creators, and future modders: a leak that gets one broad prediction right does not automatically validate every attached claim.

The original post is still widely referenced in archived discussions as the Project Americas claim. Rockstar Games has never identified it as legitimate, commented on it, or used “Project Americas” as an official GTA VI title or codename.

What the Project Americas post actually claimed

The anonymous Reddit post made a long list of assertions. Its central idea was that the next Grand Theft Auto would return to Vice City while initially—or eventually—reaching beyond it into other parts of the Americas. Community retellings commonly turn that into a claim that GTA VI will have several full cities or a playable South American region.

That is not what has been established by Rockstar. The post also included claims about a period setting, a specific protagonist setup, story influences, drug-running systems, and an evolving map. Those details should be treated as one package from one unverified source, rather than as individually sourced reports.

That distinction matters because viral summaries often strip away the uncertainty. A map concept may be reposted with “Project Americas leak” in its caption, then later be mistaken for a Rockstar plan, a current build detail, or a guarantee of post-launch locations. None of those conclusions follows from the original Reddit post.

What Rockstar has officially confirmed about GTA VI’s setting

Rockstar’s official GTA VI material establishes a much clearer baseline. GTA VI is set in the state of Leonida, with Vice City at its center. Rockstar has also named the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga National Park among the locations players will visit.

Those confirmed places already point to a broad regional map with dense urban areas, islands, wetlands, industrial towns, rural spaces, and wilderness. They do not confirm a second country, a second full-sized city outside Leonida, or travel to a Brazil-inspired location.

Rockstar’s official character material also presents Jason and Lucia as the game’s central duo. The released trailers and character pages portray a contemporary setting, complete with modern smartphones, social platforms, current-style vehicles, and present-day culture. That conflicts with the Project Americas post’s often-repeated claim of a story primarily set in the 1970s and 1980s.

For the current official reference point, use Rockstar’s GTA VI page, not fan-made map labels or cropped screenshots of old Reddit threads.

Why a few apparent “hits” do not verify the full rumor

The Project Americas post is still discussed because it mentioned Vice City before Rockstar officially announced GTA VI’s return there. It also described an ambitious world, which feels broadly compatible with the scale Rockstar has shown in trailers.

But Vice City was one of the most persistent community predictions for years. It had obvious appeal as a setting Rockstar had not revisited in a modern mainline game, and Florida-inspired references had long been a common part of GTA speculation. Correctly guessing, reporting, or repeating a plausible setting is not the same as demonstrating access to development information.

The more specific claims are where the post runs into problems:

  • Time period: Rockstar’s official material presents modern-day Leonida, not an 1970s or 1980s-era GTA VI.
  • Lead characters: Rockstar has introduced Jason and Lucia as the protagonists, rather than the single male lead commonly attributed to the old post.
  • Multiple countries: Rockstar has announced Leonida locations, but has not announced a playable Brazil-inspired city or another country.
  • Feature lists: Claims about smuggling mechanics, chapter structure, map changes, and travel restrictions have no official corroboration.

There is another issue: details of the rumor have changed through repetition. Some reposts blend the original Reddit claims with later fan theories, alleged leaked-footage observations, and guesses based on Rockstar’s previous games. Once that happens, it becomes almost impossible to assess a claim fairly unless readers return to the original wording.

Rumor credibility: Low confidence

Classification: Low confidence.

The Project Americas claim came from an anonymous Reddit account without publicly verifiable evidence. There is no known supporting document, official acknowledgment, or independent reporting that verifies its central multi-country and period-setting assertions. Rockstar’s official marketing has also contradicted important elements of the post.

Its one major point of overlap—Vice City—does not lift the overall rumor to moderate confidence. A broad prediction can be right for many reasons, especially when it concerns a location that had been heavily speculated about by the GTA community for years.

That does not prove every remaining detail is false. Game development changes constantly, and Rockstar has not published a full map, mission list, or post-launch plan. It does mean that players should not cite Project Americas as evidence that those things are coming.

What this means for PC players and the modding community

For prospective GTA VI mod creators and FiveM communities, the sensible takeaway is not to plan around a rumored second continent. Plan around confirmed information and transferable skills instead: optimized vehicle assets, clean texture workflows, sensible resource dependencies, server performance testing, and documentation that makes a release easier to maintain.

If Rockstar expands GTA VI after launch, adds new regions, or eventually supports a PC ecosystem with new creation opportunities, those developments will be worth examining when there is a reliable source. Until then, maps built around “Project Americas confirmed” are fan concepts, not technical references for future projects.

It is fine to enjoy map reconstructions and discuss what a larger Leonida could look like. Just label them accurately. The information around this old rumor is speculative and might not accurately represent current or future events.
