Rumor status: Moderate confidence, still unconfirmed.
The claim is straightforward: GTA VI could expand beyond its launch map with new cities and missions after release. It originated in an April 15, 2020 report by Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier, published while GTA VI had not yet been officially announced. Bloomberg reported that Rockstar had reportedly scaled back an earlier, larger version of the project and planned to grow the game over time with additional cities and missions.
That is a meaningful report from a journalist with a substantial games-industry track record. It is not, however, an official GTA VI post-launch roadmap. Rockstar Games has confirmed Leonida as GTA VI’s setting, but it has not announced story expansions, new regions, a live map-update schedule, or how any future content would be delivered.
The distinction matters. A development plan discussed in 2020 can change dramatically before launch—and again after a game ships.
What Bloomberg’s original report actually claimed
The original Bloomberg report focused primarily on changes to Rockstar’s workplace culture and production practices. Within that reporting, it described an early GTA VI concept that was reportedly broader in geographic scope before being reduced to a fictional Miami setting and nearby areas.
Bloomberg further reported that Rockstar intended to add more missions and cities over time. The apparent purpose, according to the report, was to make the project more manageable and reduce the pressure associated with trying to build every planned area before launch.
That is the source of many modern posts claiming that GTA VI will receive “new states,” “multiple cities,” or an ever-growing map. But those versions often skip the important context:
- The report described an alleged internal development approach, not a public promise to players.
- It did not provide a release schedule, number of cities, expansion pricing, or platform details.
- It did not establish that every planned addition would be part of single-player, online play, or both.
- It was published years before Rockstar officially revealed GTA VI.
In other words, the report is more substantial than a random social-media “leak,” but it cannot be treated like a current feature list.
What Rockstar has confirmed
Rockstar’s official GTA VI material confirms that the game is set in Leonida, including Vice City and surrounding locations. The official GTA VI page is the best reference point for what the company has publicly identified about the world, characters, and setting.
Rockstar has not publicly confirmed that GTA VI will add a new city after launch. It has not confirmed an episodic single-player structure, a map-expansion system, or a GTA Online successor with a defined geographic update plan.
That absence does not disprove Bloomberg’s reporting. Studios frequently avoid discussing post-launch plans until much closer to release, especially when those plans depend on development progress, platform strategy, and the reception of the base game. Still, the absence means players should keep their expectations in check.
Why the rumor keeps returning
The GTA VI map expansion rumor has staying power because it fits how modern Rockstar games have been supported. GTA Online has received years of new activities, properties, interiors, missions, vehicles, and map-adjacent additions. That history makes continued GTA VI support plausible.
But plausible is not the same as confirmed. GTA Online’s update history does not tell us whether GTA VI will use the same model, whether future regions would be free or paid, or whether Rockstar would expand the single-player world at all.
Another reason the claim gets distorted is that “cities over time” sounds much more concrete than it is. A future city could mean a major new landmass, a smaller playable district, a mission-focused location, or a plan that never survives production. Without an official announcement, none of those interpretations deserves to be presented as fact.
Rumor credibility
Classification: Moderate confidence.
The report earns more credibility than a typical GTA VI rumor because Bloomberg identified the claim in a reported article, and Jason Schreier has a long record of breaking and documenting major game-development stories. Rockstar’s eventual confirmation that GTA VI is set in Leonida, including Vice City, is also broadly consistent with the report’s Miami-setting description.
There are major limits, though. The city-expansion element has not been independently detailed by Rockstar, Take-Two Interactive, or a newer report with specific evidence. Most importantly, the report is from 2020. Internal plans can be revised, postponed, split into different projects, or abandoned entirely over a long development cycle.
So the responsible reading is: Rockstar may have considered or planned an evolving GTA VI world, according to credible reporting. Players should not assume that plan remains active or know what form it would take.
What it could mean for PC players and mod creators
If GTA VI eventually receives major official map additions, that could create a bigger and more varied playground for players, roleplay communities, and creators. New regions could inspire fresh server themes, travel systems, businesses, vehicle packs, mission frameworks, and location-specific roleplay.
For mod creators, though, it would also create a practical compatibility challenge. Major game updates can alter world data, interiors, navigation, assets, scripting behavior, and the tools that community projects rely on. Anyone building future GTA VI resources should expect updates to require testing rather than assuming a map addition will be drop-in compatible.
Smart preparation without betting on the rumor
- Build resources in smaller, clearly separated modules where possible.
- Document dependencies, install steps, and supported game versions.
- Keep original project files and versioned backups.
- Avoid advertising any script, map, or server concept as “future expansion ready” without verified platform support.
- Wait for official tools, platform rules, and modding-community standards before committing to large GTA VI projects.
That advice applies whether the Bloomberg report proves completely accurate, partly accurate, or outdated. A flexible workflow is simply good modding practice.
Watch for official details, not imagined roadmaps
The safest signal will be direct communication from Rockstar Games or Take-Two Interactive. A real post-launch plan would likely include clear details: which mode receives the content, whether it is an update or expansion, which platforms are included, and when players can expect it.
Until then, be wary of posts that turn one old report into a precise “confirmed” list of future GTA VI locations. They are adding certainty that the original sourcing does not provide.
