Short answer: upgrade your graphics card now only if it improves the games you play right now. If GTA VI is your only reason to buy, waiting is usually the smarter move.
Rockstar Games has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026. Rockstar has not announced a PC release date, PC system requirements, supported graphics features, or official GTA VI benchmarks at the time of writing. That makes any exact “best GPU for GTA VI” claim premature.
A powerful GPU may give you useful headroom for a future GTA VI PC version, but it cannot guarantee a resolution, settings preset, or frame rate. The information in this guide is partly an evidence-based estimate and partly practical buying advice; it is speculative and might not accurately represent current or future GTA VI PC performance.
Start with the question that actually matters: what do you play now?
A graphics-card purchase should solve a current problem, not merely protect you from an unknown one. GTA VI could arrive on PC well after its console release, and the GPU market can change dramatically over that period. New products, lower pricing on existing cards, driver improvements, and independent GTA VI benchmarks could all alter the sensible choice.
An upgrade makes sense today if one or more of these points applies:

1080p: buy for value, not bragging rights
For a 1080p 60 Hz display, a sensible modern midrange GPU is generally enough for current games at high settings, with selective use of upscaling where needed. 1440p: the balanced target for a new gaming PC
For many players building now, 1440p is the sweet spot: visibly sharper than standard 1080p without the heavy GPU demand of 4K. If you want a roughly 60 FPS planning target in future demanding games, be prepared to tune settings instead of treating “Ultra” as mandatory. Shadows, ray tracing, volumetric effects, and distance settings often have a disproportionate performance cost for a smaller visual gain.
4K and advanced lighting: pay only if you will use it now

- Case clearance: Measure maximum GPU length, thickness, and height. Modern cards can be surprisingly large, and a side panel that barely closes is not a successful build.
- Power-cable clearance: If your card uses a newer high-power connector, make sure the cable is not sharply bent against the case panel. Follow the card and PSU maker’s installation guidance.

Three upgrade decisions that are usually smarter than guessing
1. Replace a genuinely outdated GPU, but stop at your monitor’s needs
Moving from an older card that struggles at 1080p to a current value-focused GPU can improve every game you play immediately. Moving from a capable 1440p card to a flagship model while keeping the same settings and display may offer much less practical value.
2. Build a balanced platform if your whole PC is old
