Rumor status: Low confidence. A social-media claim from gaming account Detective Seeds, posted in mid-March 2025, stated that Grand Theft Auto VI was reportedly running at 60 frames per second on PlayStation 5 Pro hardware. The post also claimed that PlayStation engineers were helping Rockstar Games optimize the title for Sony’s upgraded console.
That is the full substance of the report: an unnamed-source claim, not a developer statement, technical demonstration, benchmark, or official product listing. Rockstar has not announced a GTA VI frame-rate target for PS5, PS5 Pro, or Xbox Series X|S. The 60 FPS PS5 Pro claim remains unconfirmed.
It is an easy rumor to understand. GTA VI is one of the most technically ambitious console releases on the horizon, and PS5 Pro is designed to offer developers more graphical headroom. But “more headroom” does not automatically equal a locked 60 FPS mode—especially in an open-world game where simulation, traffic, NPC density, streaming, and CPU workload can matter as much as graphics power.
What the original claim says—and what it does not
The original post attributed its information to unnamed sources. It suggested that GTA VI was running at 60 FPS on PS5 Pro and that Sony engineers were involved in optimization work. Neither Rockstar, Sony, nor Take-Two Interactive has publicly verified either point.
Crucially, the claim did not provide the details needed to assess a performance report properly. There was no information about:
- Whether 60 FPS was sustained, variable, or limited to a specific scene
- The rendering resolution or upscaling method in use
- Visual compromises compared with a possible 30 FPS quality mode
- Whether ray tracing features were enabled, reduced, or disabled
- Whether the build was representative of the final game
- Whether the report referred to gameplay, a technical test, or an internal development target
Those omissions matter. A game can technically run at 60 FPS in a controlled test while still shipping with a 30 FPS target, an unlocked mode, or no 60 FPS option at all. Development performance tests are not retail specifications.
What Rockstar has officially confirmed
Rockstar’s official GTA VI page identifies PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as the announced console platforms. It does not list frame-rate modes, resolution targets, PS5 Pro enhancements, or detailed graphics settings.
Rockstar also stated that Trailer 2 was captured entirely in-game on a base PlayStation 5. That tells us the game is being developed and presented with standard PS5 hardware in mind. It does not tell us whether the final game runs at 30 FPS, 40 FPS, 60 FPS, or with multiple selectable modes on any console.
Sony’s own PS5 Pro information describes improved graphics capabilities and technologies intended to help compatible games deliver sharper images, enhanced ray tracing, or smoother performance. However, compatibility and potential are not the same thing as a confirmed GTA VI enhancement profile. Rockstar would need to announce its plans before players can treat a PS5 Pro mode as real.
Why 60 FPS is plausible—but far from guaranteed
The rumor is not impossible. PS5 Pro gives developers additional graphics capability, and many games use upgraded hardware to improve image quality, ray tracing, or performance. A 60 FPS GTA VI mode could be technically achievable under some combination of resolution, upscaling, visual settings, and scene complexity.
Still, GTA VI is not a linear action game with predictable camera paths and tightly controlled environments. Rockstar’s trailers point toward a densely populated version of Leonida with busy roads, wildlife, interiors, crowds, water, long sightlines, and a large amount of activity happening around the player. Those details can raise the workload for both graphics processing and the CPU-side systems that manage the world.
That distinction is important. A console upgrade can help with rendering, but some open-world bottlenecks are tied to simulation and CPU processing. If a game is heavily CPU-limited in crowded city scenes, increased GPU power alone may not turn a 30 FPS target into a consistent 60 FPS experience.
Rockstar could also choose to spend extra hardware capability on visual fidelity rather than frame rate. Better image reconstruction, stronger reflections, denser traffic, longer draw distances, or improved lighting are all possible priorities. Until Rockstar shares technical specifications, treating any one outcome as inevitable is guesswork.
Rumor credibility
Confidence level: Low confidence.
The claim came from a named public account rather than a completely anonymous forum post, which is better than a screenshot with no source at all. But a named account is not the same as verifiable evidence. The report offered no footage, documentation, corroborating source, methodology, or on-the-record confirmation from people working on GTA VI, Rockstar, Sony, or PlayStation Studios.
There is also no independent reporting that establishes a 60 FPS PS5 Pro mode as a current Rockstar plan. Reposts and articles repeating the original social-media statement do not count as corroboration; they are usually tracing back to the same unsupported claim.
The source’s claim may eventually prove accurate, partly accurate, or outdated. Game performance work changes throughout development, and platform-holder support for major releases is normal enough that it would not independently confirm a particular performance target. For now, the evidence only supports this: someone claimed GTA VI was running at 60 FPS on PS5 Pro. It does not support the stronger claim that GTA VI will launch with a 60 FPS PS5 Pro mode.
What this could mean for PC players and future modders
For GTA VI PC players, this console rumor should not be used to predict PC requirements or performance. PC specifications, graphics options, optimization work, and release timing have not been announced by Rockstar. A potential PS5 Pro mode—if one exists—would not provide a reliable minimum or recommended PC target.
For future mod creators and FiveM communities, performance modes are worth watching because they can shape player expectations. Higher refresh-rate gameplay is especially valuable in driving, competitive activities, and busy multiplayer environments. But Rockstar’s single-player console settings would not tell us what future modding tools, multiplayer frameworks, or server environments can support.
The sensible move is to wait for official technical information, ideally closer to launch, and to keep an eye on footage accompanied by clear capture conditions. “Captured on PS5 Pro” is useful context; “60 FPS” without resolution, settings, scene type, and stability data is not enough to make a buying decision.
What to watch for next
A credible update would come from Rockstar or Sony through an official GTA VI product page, a trailer description, a technical showcase, accessibility documentation, or launch-day patch notes. Reputable hands-on coverage may also clarify frame-rate modes once reviewers have retail or review builds.
Until then, avoid treating a console purchase as a GTA VI performance guarantee. The PS5 Pro 60 FPS report is interesting because it is technically possible, not because it has been demonstrated. That is a very different standard.
